Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug is formed on 10th December 1930.
The region’s area is one of the largest among Russian territorial units. Located in the Arctic zone of the world's largest West Siberian Plain, it occupies a vast area of 750.3 thousand km2. Much of the county is located within the Arctic Circle.

Large settlements of the district are cities of Salekhard, Labytnangi Noyabrsk, Novy Urengoy, Nadym, Gubkin, Muravlenko, Tarko-Sale. A total of 58 regional municipal formations. As of January 1, 2010 the Okrug is home to about 550 thousand people, of whom 15% are rural residents. Yamal is the most urbanized region in the Russian Arctic. Population density is 0.7 persons per 1 km2.
Yamal-Nenets Okrug is bordered: to the West with the Nenets Autonomous District and the Komi Republic in the south with the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, in the east with the Krasnoyarsk territory.
The Okrug is the traditional territories of small-numbered Northern Indigenous Peoples: Nenets, Khanty, Selkup. Their ratio is about 7% of the Autonomous Okrug population. The authorities make significant efforts to preserve their traditional way of life. Today in the Autonomous Okrug grazes the largest number of reindeer in Russia, which has about 700 thousand heads. In Yamal rivers and lakes fattens the world's largest herd of Coregonus fish, which is 70% of the total Russian population. The main objective for the Government of Yamal is the implementation of structural changes in agriculture, which would improve the competitiveness of traditional industries and encourage the development of rural areas.
The Autonomous Okrug has received world fame due to its unique reserves of natural resources. Initial total resources of the region are estimated at 125 trillion cum of gas and about 23 billion tons of oil and condensate. During the whole period of operation 14 trillion cum of gas were produced. Today the Okrug provides the production of 8% of its oil and over 90% of Russian gas.
Strategic deposits of solid commercial minerals were explored in the Polar Urals, and with the "Ural Industrial - Ural Polar" project realization is connected the creation of a radically new transport scheme of the Russian North and the formation of a new mining center of the country.
